Teyana Taylor gives fans an update on her co-parenting dynamic with her ex-husband Iman Shumpert more than a year after their messy divorce.
“Divorce to me is mourning the death of a living being,” Taylor, 35, said in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Tuesday January 13. “I think once the kids are involved, you understand the importance of still having to show up for each other. At least for the next 18 years, and being the best co-parents possible.”
Taylor added that she doesn’t “want people to start being afraid of marriage, because marriage is a beautiful thing.”
Taylor and Shumpert, also 35, welcomed daughters Junie, 10, and Rue, 5, during their marriage, which lasted from 2016 to 2024.
Taylor revealed her split from Shumpert in September 2023.
“AHT AHT! Not too much on my best friend! In all honesty, Iman and I are broken up and have been for a while,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ is not one of the reasons we left. We are still best friends, great business partners, and make one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children.”
Taylor continued, “Most importantly we are a FAMILY and in 10 years together, 7 years of marriage, we have never messed with or about THIS. We just keep you out of the group chat lol, that’s the reason we were able to separate successfully and peacefully without all the outside noise.”
The following month, it was revealed that Taylor had filed for divorce from Shumpert in January 2023, citing “cruel treatment” as the reason for the separation. In his initial filing, Taylor claimed that Shumpert was a “jealous narcissist” during their marriage. However, Shumpert denied this allegation in his own filing, stating that the only reason for their divorce was an “irretrievably broken bond.”
Taylor and Shumpert’s divorce was finalized in July 2024, but their court battle wasn’t over yet. Reports circulated in late 2025 that the couple had separated, although they have not publicly commented on the state of their romance.
