Tesla is ending production of the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, CEO Elon Musk announced during a conference call Wednesday. The company will manufacture final versions of the two electric vehicles in the next quarter, he said.
Musk said Tesla would build Optimus robots instead in the same factory space in Fremont, California. Musk said his company would offer support to existing Model S and Model X owners “for as long as people own the vehicles.”
“It’s time to end the Model S and X programs with an honorable discharge, because we are truly moving toward a future based on autonomy,” he said. “So if you want to buy a Model S and X, now is the time to order it.”
Tesla spear the Model S in 2012, and it is considered the first car to make electric vehicles widely attractive. The Model X was Tesla’s second major electric vehicle program. But sales of both models have stagnated in recent years, despite interior and exterior refreshes along the way.
