Savannah Guthrie bursts into tears as she finds her voice

Guthrie opened up about his voice surgery journey in a segment on the “Today” show, which aired Friday, Jan. 23. The clip, shared on YouTube, captured the moment the co-presenter heard her voice for the first time after a week of post-surgery rest.
After Dr. Peak Woo inspected her vocal cords, he encouraged Guthrie to speak and she delivered her usual greeting. “Hello, today is Tuesday January 13, 2026. I’m using my voice for the first time, and it sounds great, I could cry,” she said.
The moment left Guthrie overcome with emotions and she broke down in tears while hugging Dr. Woo. She explained that her journey to regaining her voice did not end after the check-up, as she had to undergo voice therapy and take three weeks off to recover.

Broadcast journalist underwent surgery to eliminate two voice problems
In the segment, Guthrie explain that her vocal problems started years ago, but she never believed it was a significant problem. “I noticed my voice was getting deeper and more scratchy, but what I thought was just normal wear and tear and aging,” she shared.
Guthrie’s lax response to the voice change immediately changed after the problems became “much worse” over the past year. She claimed the situation was so serious that she sometimes had difficulty “finishing a sentence” and she sought Dr Woo’s expertise as a voice specialist.
Through the doctor, Guthrie discovered she needed microscopic laryngeal surgery to remove a bleeding polyp on one side of her vocal cords. The surgery also included the removal of a vocal nodule or “overuse callus” on the other side of her vocal cords.

According to Guthrie, undergoing the surgery wasn’t the hardest part of the journey. She had to remain silent to heal after the operation, a “rather terrifying” but “beautiful” process for the show’s journalist.
Guthrie said she didn’t speak for eight days and was “pretty much silent for about a week after that.” During these moments, she had to learn to keep quiet and get used to being alone, in solitude. Although it was a little scary, Guthrie found a glimmer of hope.
“I thought it was a very beautiful moment and a spiritual moment, and I’m very grateful,” Guthrie said of her days of silence. She wasn’t the only one feeling happy to have her voice back as fans flooded the comments section with their congratulations and well wishes.
