America’s once-promising transition to electric vehicles may have turns aroundbut at least some in Hollywood are trying to do their part. Rivian has partnered with Grey’s Anatomy to make a custom electric ambulance for the long-running series.
The ambulance is a modified version of Rivian Commercial Van. The custom “vanbulance” serves a dual purpose: to prevent exhaust fumes on set (which could harm cast and crew) and to incorporate an eco-friendly storyline. “As an added benefit, the elimination of engine noise provided a welcome calm while the cameras were rolling,” Rivan wrote in a statement. blog post.

The vehicle includes a few production-specific touches. Its walls and roof panels are removable, allowing cameras to reach the angles required for interior shots. Additionally, Rivian replaced the standard van’s roll-up rear door with double doors while adding a side entry to the cargo area. The company also added custom lighting and exterior packaging reading “Seattle Emergency Response Services.”
The team consulted with Huntington Beach and Los Angeles firefighters to inform the interior design. “Their feedback was invaluable in understanding how first responders actually use their vehicles,” Rivian wrote.
