With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 fast approaching, the tournament is already being billed as one of the most unpredictable editions in recent memory. Conditions at all venues, the busy international schedule and the thin margins of the shortest format mean there is no guaranteed path to the final four. While India are widely considered favorites due to their country familiarity, squad depth and overall balance, several other teams are quietly building strong cases of their own. Among them, Australia remains a team that cannot be ignored, especially given their history of success at major ICC events. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that despite stiff competition, Australia have all the ingredients needed to book a place in the semi-finals.
Ricky Ponting explains why Australia will be in the top 4
Speaking at the ICC review, Ponting expressed confidence in Australia’s chances, highlighting the team’s overall balance. He emphasized that although India Although they may start as favorites due to conditions and talent, Australia are well equipped to challenge any team in the tournament. According to Ponting, flexibility is the Australian unit’s greatest strength, particularly the abundance of quality all-round talent.
“If you look at the team, I think they have as good a chance as anyone. India will probably be the big favorites in this event, I think, because of the conditions, the talent and the group of players they have put together. They will be tough to beat, but I definitely think we will see Australia there in the semi-final,” said Ponting.
He highlighted the presence of players like Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell And Cameron Greenall of which offer multiple options with the bat and ball. Ponting also singled out a young all-rounder Cooper Connollywho had a remarkable run in the Big Bash League, winning the MVP award for the second year in a row. Ponting noted that if the pitches offer assistance to the spinners, Australia can easily include Connolly to support Maxwell and Adam Zampagiving them three true rotation options without weakening their batting depth. This adaptability, he believes, could be a deciding factor in a long and demanding tournament.
“The one thing they have in this team is very good flexibility with so many all-rounders. You look at (Marcus) Stoinis, (Glenn) Maxwell, Cameron Green, there are so many. Cooper Connolly. A young guy who just won the BBL (Big Bash League) MVP again for the second year in a row. If it looks like it’s going to pan out, I think Australia will go with Connolly to support Maxwell and (Adam) Zampa. So, They have three spin bowling options there,” added Ponting.
Big match experience is essential in ICC tournaments
Ponting also spoke about the unique challenges of ICC events, describing them as extremely difficult to win due to the quality of opposition and pressure situations. He admitted that Australia fell short in the previous edition because their senior players failed to deliver at crucial times. In tournaments like the T20 World Cup, timing is everything, and success often depends on the ability of star players to find their form simultaneously. Ponting believes that lesson has been well learned and Australia will be eager to ensure their winners fire when it matters most in 2026.
“What I know about these ICC events is that they are difficult to win, because all the best teams in the world play there and if you want to win it you have to have all your good players playing well at the right time. That’s what Australia probably didn’t have last time. They just didn’t get their big guns firing at the right time to win an event,” Ponting added further.

High expectations despite the absence of Pat Cummins
Australia, however, will head into the tournament without one of its biggest winners. Patrick Cummins has been ruled out of the 2026 T20 World Cup due to a nagging lumbar stress injury, leaving a significant leadership and bowling void. Under the captaincy of Mitchell SwampAustralia is expected to miss the calm presence and big-game temperament of Cummins.
Despite this setback, the rest of the team seems well settled and full of experience. With a fast-paced offense, versatile players and proven pressure game players, expectations remain high.
