The best horror films find terror in the simplest places. A summer camp. Your dreams. A quiet suburban road. And, in the new film low voice (which is deliberately lowercase), the horror comes from an even simpler place: your headphones.
Written and directed by Ian Tuason (who is take the reins of Paranormal activity franchise), low voice tells the story of a podcaster, played by Nina Kiri, who is sent mysterious audio recordings. Recordings that, when played correctly, unlock something terrible. It’s a bit like The ringbut without the VCR. Check out the first trailer.
It’s hard to say exactly what’s going on here. Is someone making a cruel joke? Do the recordings actually reveal something supernatural? If so, what is the purpose behind this and why send them to this particular person? Either way, the trailer certainly makes us want to know more.
Additionally, the trailer itself is very impressive. We love all the layered voices and whispers you hear as the camera slowly moves around the room. You get this creepy feeling of listening to something you’re not supposed to. This is probably how the character feels too.
Adding to the unsettling nature, A24 also released this clip which gives us some more of that creepy audio. If you want to know a little more, it’s probably worth a look. If you’re still scared, we wouldn’t recommend it, though.
low voice debuted at the Fantasia Film Festival last summer and, as the trailer quotes show, received good reviews overall. A24 then picked it up shortly after. This brand image, which is reminiscent of films and campaigns like Hereditary, speak to me, And I saw the TV glowadds a huge seal of approval. In addition, producers of Paranormal activity I must have liked it enough to hire Tuason to direct the next episode. All of this means you have a feeling it will be worth the trip. And we’ll all get that chance on the second Friday the 13th of the year, March 13.
