A new video game, Arknights: Endfield, had to suddenly stop payments via PayPal just hours after its launch. The community discovered that other players’ purchases were withdrawing money from their accounts.
Social media users have noticed that connecting their PayPal account to the game will result in other unauthorized transactions being made.

Arknights: Endfield is part of the genre of gacha games. These take other genres, in this case action role-playing, and apply a “gachapon” to them. Like the old turnkey machines that gave toys in small capsules, Endfield offers “banners” that can be paid for a random chance of finding new, potentially stronger characters.
Endfield allows users to link their PayPal accounts to the game for faster transactions.
In some cases, transactions were made in foreign currencies as users from around the world crossed paths. Unfortunately, one user was charge with a fee of 1,300 euros after a Japanese player spent that much on the game.

The official Arknights: Endfield X account (formerly Twitter) has been updated since its initial post on January 22. In a new post, they detail the timeline, including their identification of “affected transactions.”
According to the team behind the game, Hypergryph, the issue only impacted “a small number of purchases.” They claim this was due to an “inconsistency between ordering and delivery of the item.”
Hypergryph has been part of the gacha side of the gaming industry for several years now. Its original game Arknights has earned the company over $1 billion since its launch in 2019.
Although the problem appears to be resolved for now, it will probably never be properly explained how it occurred. Large swathes of the video game industry are known for remaining silent when problems arise.
Despite the issues, Arknights: Endfield has been downloaded over 30 million times since its launch yesterday.
