Missouri gaming regulators have rejected the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) request to block prop betting on college games. With months of fiascos surrounding betting style and college-level gaming, it’s surprising the ban hasn’t been implemented.
The NCAA complaints that there has been an increase harassment by puntersas well as the fact that inside information is used to profit from gambling. Another implication of maintaining side bets is that students bet on themselves, manipulating the game for their own gain.
Despite providing data and examples of issues that occurred, the Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) denied the NCAA’s request.
If the MGC had agreed to change its sports betting rules, it could have put an end to certain game manipulations.
So why did the MGC reject the proposal? It depends on how new legal gambling is in the state.
Sports betting was only authorized on December 1, 2025, and the Commission says it’s still too new to start changing things. Commission President Jan Zimmerman said:
“I just don’t think I have enough information to grant a request from the NCAA to ban this type of sports betting, because I don’t know enough yet.”
Prop bets, or proposition bets, rely on details. It’s not just about “who won”, but can apply to multiple aspects of the game. Who takes the most shots, which players will score, etc.
