Natalie Portman Slams Sundance Immigration Crackdown After Alex Pretti’s Death

Natalie Portman blasted federal officials and the current crackdown on immigration as “the worst of the worst in humanity.”

At least six people died during the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement campaign in the United States, the latest being Alex Pretti, 37, who was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis on January 24.

“What’s happening in our country right now is absolutely horrible, and what the federal government, the Trump administration, Kristi Noem, ICE, what they’re doing is truly the worst of the worst of humanity,” Portman said. Deadline at the Sundance Film Festival.

“And then we also have the best of the best of humanity for the way people support each other in community and Americans supporting each other and protecting each other and fighting against injustice. I couldn’t be more proud to be an American right now, the way Americans are behaving, and I couldn’t be sadder to be an American right now with the way the government is behaving.”

Federal authorities immediately described Pretti, a U.S. citizen, as an armed agitator who posed a threat to immigration officials after the fatal Jan. 24 shooting. But videos showed Pretti’s hands were only holding a phone moments before a masked Border Patrol agent opened fire on him following a scuffle with several agents.

“We are citizens of this country and I look at what is happening around me and I am mortified,” Slattery said. Vanity Fair at Sundance. “I still don’t understand why – so, ICE exists, but why are these guys wearing masks? Is it such a heinous job? Is it so embarrassing and so shameful that these so-called police officers – this police force, this border patrol – are wearing masks to work?”

Pretti’s death in Minneapolis comes weeks after Renee Good, a U.S. citizen, was shot multiple times by an ICE officer. Videos show she was steering the wheels of her Honda Pilot away from Officer Jonathan Ross when he opened fire. Trump administration officials have repeatedly defended Ross, saying his life was in danger.

Amy Poehler took a moment before beginning her latest podcast episode of “Good shot” to honor the Minneapolis community following the deaths of Pretti and Good.

THE White House confirmed that three federal investigations into Pretti’s fatal shooting are underway.

At a press briefing Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI were investigating the shooting and that U.S. Customs and Border Protection was “conducting its own internal review.”

Many celebrities have spoken out online following Pretti’s death.

In a lengthy Instagram post, model Bella Hadid called for the abolition of ICE, sharply criticizing their aggressive tactics.

“Abolish ICE. How much more can America take… There are so many changes that need to happen within US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the morals that the US administration must uphold. This is outrageous, dangerous, horror movie-like behavior,” Hadid wrote.

“The actions taken by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are increasingly aggressive, illegal and deeply disturbing,” she added. Hadid also said it was “incomprehensible” that the Trump administration could remain silent and claimed that what is happening in America right now is a “monstrosity.”

A vocal critic of Trump, actor Mark Ruffalo strongly condemned Pretti’s murder in a message to Bluesky.

“Cold-blooded murder on the streets of the United States by an occupying military gang, creating havoc. We have fought wars in other countries for less than this,” he wrote. Ruffalo previously protested ICE by wearing an “ICE OUT” pin at the Golden Globes on January 11. He also wore a “BE GOOD” pin as an ode to Renee Good.

Famous actress Jamie Lee Curtis expressed her pride in people protesting ICE in Minnesota. “Let the ICE STORM OF RESISTANCE RING LOUDLY,” she wrote on Instagram. In another article, she condemned the deaths of Good and Pretti, both of whom died at the hands of federal agents. “THEY WERE AMERICANS! SHOT BY OUR GOVERNMENT,” Curtis wrote.

“Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon described Pretti’s death as a “cold-blooded execution.”

“Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, has spread morally reprehensible and disgusting lies about the cold-blooded execution of the young man, Alex Pretti, who was gunned down in the streets of Minneapolis today,” she said in a video. shared on Instagram.
