Once some actors start to find success, they stop taking big risks, but fortunately, Australian actress Margot Robbie always seems willing to try new roles and genres. Although this means we can see her in a wide variety of roles and that rulesit also means she’s sometimes the best thing in some not-so-great movies. In 2018, she starred in the neo-noir thriller “Terminal,” and while she’s typically great and the film is incredibly stylish, it’s also kind of a weird mess. Oh, and Mike Myers, the “Austin Powers” guy? He is also there, playing the role of the station concierge.
Disparaged by critics for its derivative plot, “Terminal” was also a box office bomb, earning less than $1 million worldwide. “Terminal” stars Robbie as a waitress who is probably also a serial killer who crosses paths with other dangerous characters in a train terminal late at night. “Terminal” is far from being one of Robbie’s best filmsbut now might be the best time to check it out because it’s currently streaming for free on Pluto TV.
Terminal is a strange journey with a surprising cast
While “Terminal” is beautiful to look at, it also deals with some very disturbing topics at random, so be careful. Of course we can see Margot Robbie as a quirky fairytale femme fatale in the world’s strangest film noirbut there’s also a pretty gross subplot about child abuse that might be too much for some viewers.
Besides Robbie and Mike Myers, “Terminal” also stars Simon Pegg as a teacher with a terminal illness (get it?) and Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons) as a hitman doing a job in the train station. It’s quite an interesting casting for a film that seems to have been largely forgotten, but perhaps it can now find new life as a cult favorite on streaming? Stranger things have happened, and while “Terminal” has a mediocre plot and some odd directing choices from first-time director Vaughn Stein, it’s just the right combination of uncomfortable weirdness and visually impressive to appeal to a certain type of moviegoer.
