What is Marathon?
Marathon is a series of first-person action shooter games developed by Bungie, first released in 1994 for the Apple Macintosh. This and the next two games in the original Marathon trilogy are science fiction mysteries set in the 28th century, when humans travel through space in spaceships. One of them, the UESC Marathon, is attacked by aliens until only one security officer, the player, is left to fight them off. Players discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence, called Durandal, has become sentient and evil, and has even summoned aliens to attack the ship. Subsequent games allow players to uncover the mysteries behind Durandal and other ancient AIs that manipulated alien races.
The series was Bungie’s first success, and it was innovative at the time in revealing story segments via computer terminals, where one could read messages from the various AIs that ran the ship, as well as the crew’s logs.
In this new version of Marathon, players will visit Tau Ceti IV, the planet where the humans of the UESC Marathon have settled. The year is 2893 and something has caused many of the colonists to disappear. The survivors have formed different groups to plunder what they can from the colony. The people wreaking this havoc are known as “Runners”, who are combat-trained humans who use cybernetic modifications to survive on the planet. Players will create their own Runner to obtain loot and find out what happened to the colony while fighting the aliens as well as other Runners.
What is an extraction shooter?
An action shooter is a type of online multiplayer game in which the objective is not just to kill enemies or other players. Instead, the objective revolves around collecting loot and completing missions.
To make things more exciting, players can only mine loot from designated locations in the game world. And to complicate matters even further, the start of the mining process will include a signal that will alert both enemies and nearby players. This means you’ll have to defend yourself for a short time against what could be waves of computer-controlled enemies or human players who may or may not attempt to steal your loot.
Some of the most popular pull shooter games currently are Arc RaidersEscape from Tarkov and Helldiverse 2.
What is the connection between Marathon and Halo?
Marathon was Bungie’s first successful series, but it was Halo that made the developer a household name. Although the two game franchises don’t have strong narrative connections, there have always been subtle references to the Marathon games in Halo. Bungie has stated that Halo is more of a spiritual successor to Marathon, but there is fan theories connecting Marathon, Halo, and even Bungie’s other major franchise, Destiny.
