The partial government shutdown that began Saturday morning is expected to delay the report’s release. January Jobs Report which was scheduled for publication this week.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said Monday that the January jobs report, originally scheduled for release Friday, would be delayed until the shutdown ends and government funding is restored.
“The release will be postponed once government funding resumes,” BLS associate commissioner Emily Liddel said in a statement. “Once funding is restored, the BLS will resume normal operations and will notify the public of any changes to the BLS release schedule for press releases.”
Federal agencies furlough non-essential workers during lockdown government shutdownwhich, in the case of the BLS, impacts workers responsible for collecting data and compiling economic reports like the monthly employment report.

Recent economic data releases were disrupted by a previous government shutdown that lasted 43 days from the start of the government’s fiscal year on Oct. 1 until mid-November, when a bipartisan deal was reached in Congress to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
Several closely watched economic releases were affected by the previous shutdown, with the September jobs report delayed from the first week of October to November 20.

The BLS was only able to produce a partial employment report for October, which was released on December 16 along with the November report.
Inflation Reportssuch as the BLS’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Bureau of Economic Analysis’s Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Index were also delayed by the shutdown, with the BLS canceling the October CPI inflation report because it was unable to retroactively collect the data.

The BLS had been catching up with its usual pace of releasing economic data until the latest partial shutdown began, although lawmakers hope a deal to fund shuttered government agencies will come to fruition soon.

The House of Representatives will begin the process of considering the Senate’s compromise bill to fund the government on Monday afternoon. The Rules Committee, which is the gatekeeper to the most controversial bills that come before the House, will meet to consider the bill at 4 p.m. ET.
Chairman Mike Johnson, R-La., said: “Fox News Sunday” that he was optimistic the shutdown could end by Tuesday, which is likely the earliest the House could bring the bill up for adoption.

Once the House passes the funding bill, it will go to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature. Once the legislation is signed into law, federal agencies will officially reopen and the BLS has indicated that it will provide a revised release date for the January jobs report once its normal operations resume.
