Peter Mandelson says he is resigning to avoid causing further embarrassment to the ruling party.

Peter Mandelson, Britain’s former ambassador to the United States, has resigned from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor Party following new revelations about his links to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, British media reported.

Mandelson, who was removed as London’s top representative in Washington last year after emails detailing his associations with Epstein emerged, said he had resigned to avoid causing further embarrassment to the ruling party, media reports said on Sunday.

“I have been further connected this weekend to the understandable furor around Jeffrey Epstein and I feel regret and apology for it,” Mandelson said in a letter reported by the BBC and the Guardian.

Mandelson said he believed weekend reports that he received multiple payments from Epstein in the early 2000s were false, but that he needed to investigate the reports, according to reports.

“In doing so, I do not wish to cause further embarrassment to the Labor Party and I am therefore withdrawing from membership of the party,” Mandelson said, according to reports.
