A Florida teenager accepted a plea deal after being arrested for stabbing his grandmother multiple times, one of the knives he used to kill her broke.
Jaylin K. Christian19 years old, was sentenced Monday January 12 to 35 years in prison for the murder of his grandmother, a former probation officer. Muriel Emerson57 years old, returning September 7, 2022. Additionally, once released in his early 50s, he will be on probation for the rest of his life.
If he violates the terms of his probation in any way after his release, Christian will be arrested and returned to prison.
Christian stabbed his grandmother with two knives, police said. When asked how many times he had stabbed her, Christian reportedly told police it was “too many to count.”
The murder took place inside Emerson’s Rockledge residence.
“She was his biggest supporter and champion,” the assistant district attorney said. Mike Doyle during Christian’s sentencing hearing, according to a press release obtained by Us every week.
Police said the investigation began with a 911 hang-up call made from a gas station in Cocoa.
Officers went to the gas station and spoke to Christian, who allegedly admitted to Emerson’s murder. Prosecutors say he even showed deputies a photo he took of his grandmother’s body.
The Rockledge Police Department rushed to Emerson’s home and found her dead. Forensic doctors later determined that she had been stabbed 42 times, including in the heart and lungs, and that the attack was carried out with such force that one of the knives he used broke.
Authorities said Emerson was attacked from behind by her struggling grandson. “Digital evidence collected by Rockledge police and prosecutors showed that he searched online for how to attack someone from behind and kill them with a knife,” the district attorney’s office said in a news release.
Emerson’s body was found in the kitchen of the home, covered with a blanket. A large pool of blood had formed around his remains, police said.
Christian was sitting on the ground near a gas station in Cocoa when he was arrested. At the time, the teenager, since convicted, had cuts on one of his hands and blood all over his shirt.
Christian told detectives he began having homicidal thoughts hours before stabbing Emerson to death. He told them he took a knife and went into the kitchen. When Emerson tried to escape, the first knife broke. Christian said he simply grabbed another knife and finished the job.
He left the house with a bag containing money and a briefcase he had stolen from his grandmothers. He also told cops he took a photo of her bloodied body before covering it with a blanket.
“Christian said he killed his grandmother in order to steal her credit card and run off with a lover he met online,” prosecutors said. “The police have not linked anyone else to the murder.”
Family members continued to express their shock, confusion and pain during the sentencing hearing, the press release explains. Christian’s mother, the statement said, “seemed satisfied with the resolution.”
