A cache of newly released documents from the Epstein files showed Friday Elon Musk apparently corresponded with the convicted sex offender in 2012 and 2013, as they discussed meeting on Jeffrey Epstein’s private island and at Musk’s SpaceX facilities in Southern California.
The emails indicate that Musk asked if he could attend the “craziest party” Epstein threw on his island.
Musk, who is CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, for years downplayed his connection to Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while in federal custody.
“Epstein tried to get me to go to his island and I REFUSED,” Musk said in a post on his social network X in September. He also complained that Sky News had mentioned him in conjunction with Epstein before naming Britain’s Prince Andrew, who had visited the island.
The U.S. Virgin Islands subpoenaed Musk in 2023 because it suspected Epstein “may have referred or attempted to refer” to Musk as a client of JPMorgan Chase.
THE Ministry of Justice released millions of additional pages of documents related to Epsteinas well as more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images, said Assistant Attorney General Todd Blanche. This release comes after weeks of criticism that the DOJ was not complying with the requirements of the federal law passed in November according to which all files linked to Epstein be made public by December 19.
Among the documents released Friday were emails dated from 2012 to 2013, showing Musk’s name but with his email address redacted.
“The world needs more romance,” Musk wrote to Epstein in October 2012, the documents say. He told Epstein he would be traveling with his then-partner, English actress Talulah Riley, to St. Barthélemy, and was potentially looking to hook up on Epstein’s island.
In a November 2013 email, Epstein offered to send Musk a private helicopter to transport him to the island and asked, “How many people will you have for the helicopter to the island?” Musk replied that it would just be him and Riley and asked, “What day/night will be craziest party on your island?”
In an article from December 2013 e-mailMusk wrote to Epstein again saying: “Christmas and New Years will be in the BVI/St Bart’s area over the holidays. Is there a good time to visit?”
“I’ll send you a helicopter,” Epstein responded, and Musk responded, “Thank you.”
In a follow-up email on December 25Musk said: “Actually, I might go home early on the 3rd. We’ll be in St. Barts.” He asked if he and Riley should go to the island the day before.
CNBC has not confirmed whether Musk has ever visited the island, although Musk has denied ever traveling there.
Musk did not respond to a request for comment.
The emails released Friday also show that in October 2012, Musk referred Epstein’s questions to his cousin, Peter Rive, founder of SolarCity. Musk had personally invested in SolarCity and served on the company’s board of directors.
In the emails, Epstein asked if the solar installer could electrify his New Mexico ranch or private island. Musk asked Rive, in a October 4, 2012 email: “Are we in New Mexico?”
Tesla acquired SolarCity in 2016 as part of a controversial agreementintegrating it into what would become the company’s energy division.
In June last year, Musk wrote in an article on X that he thought President Donald Trump and his administration hid Epstein-related files from public view in order to protect the president’s reputation.
“It’s time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in Epstein’s files,” Musk, who was in the middle of a public spat with the president, wrote at the time. “This is the real reason they haven’t been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”
A few days later, he apologized for articles about Trump that he said “went too far.”
