It may be hard to believe, but despite three films in the “Avatar” franchise, there is still a lot about this world that we don’t fully know. We have witnessed miraculous births, confirmation of the real existence of the Pandora goddess Eywa, inexplicable hybridization rituals between humans and Na’vi… and it was just in “Fire & Ash”. Each sequel seems to pose more questions than answers, but audiences may not even have realized that there is still one very important question waiting to be answered. In fact, it dates back to the first film in 2009.
This information (and much more like it) is courtesy of the book “The Making of Avatar” by author Joe Fordhamwhich reveals a lot of background information regarding “Avatar”, “The Way of Water” and “Fire & Ash”. Published late last year, the book provides a fascinating insight into what mastermind James Cameron intends to explore in the fourth and fifth “Avatar” films: assuming they are madeOf course. This is the Avatar program which gives this franchise its name and the origins of this technology. To date, all we really know about the original film is that Sigourney Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine is the Actually scientific leader of this mission, but how did she get to this position in the first place? These are the questions Cameron asked himself during the screenwriting process. As he explained in an interview in the book:
“When will [Grace] coming to Pandora? Who was his mentor? How did she end up inheriting the Avatar program? I imagined a story around Grace and the man she ended up replacing, her mentor, the founder of the Avatar Program, Brantley Giess. »
This character, however, was never included in the final version of “Avatar.”

What if things aren’t as simple as they seem in “Avatar”? The 2009 film presents a fairly simple narrative. (Well, as “simple” as it sounds when it comes to humans on an alien world and inhabitants of “recombinant” bodies made by the native population, thousands of light years from Earth.) But that’s what we doesn’t see in the blockbuster launch of the franchise who should play an important role in the films to come: namely the true creator of the Avatar program.
In “The Making of Avatar”, writer Joe Fordham explains that James Cameron’s original plans for Brantley Giess ultimately required major streamlining during the writing process. According to the book, the director teamed up with writer Laeta Kalogridis (known for “Shutter Island,” “Alita: Battle Angel,” the Netflix series “Altered Carbon” and last year’s “Another Simple Favor”) to pare things down and revise the structure of the first “Avatar” film. Much of Brantley Giess’ dialogue was given to Sigourney Weaver’s Grace, while Brantley himself was removed entirely. This rewrite apparently took place in the spring of 2006, providing a rare glimpse into the incredibly long development these films went through.
However, if things go the way Cameron wants, it won’t mean the end of this mysterious character. Fordham notes that “Although we ultimately don’t see him in ‘Avatar,’ Giess becomes an important part of the ongoing story, which will be revealed in ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5.’” It’s just another reason to hope that “Fire & Ash” is performing well enough at the box office to warrant more trips to Pandora.
