Arsenal’s Tonali not up for grabs as Gunners scramble to replace stricken Merino

Newcastle rejected the suggestions Arsenal inquired about midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Reports this morning claimed the Gunners had inquired about the Italy international as they searched for a replacement for Mikel Merino, who faces missing the remainder of the season with a foot injury.

Tonali would fit the bill after excelling for Newcastle since arriving from AC Milan in 2023, but the Tynesiders have denied any contact with Arsenal.

It would be very difficult to conclude a deal of this magnitude before the deadline which closes at 7 p.m. tonight.

And with Newcastle’s midfield currently struggling with the absences of Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes due to injuries, the club would be unlikely to consider losing Tonali.

Tonali has a contract at St James’ Park until 2029, a deal which was negotiated during a 10-month suspension for illegal betting activities.

There could, however, be one leaving Newcastle today, with Jamaal Lascelles set to end his 12-year association with the club and join Leicester.
