Amazon Tuesday, sent a notice to cloud employees in an apparent error acknowledging “organizational changes” at the company.
The e-commerce giant is expected to announce widespread layoffs across its workforce as early as this week, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. Amazon’s cloud computing and stores units are among the divisions expected to be affected.
“Changes like this are difficult for everyone,” wrote Colleen Aubrey, senior vice president of applied AI solutions at Amazon Web Services, in an email viewed by CNBC. “These decisions are difficult and are made thoughtfully as we position our organization and AWS for future success. »
The memo also references a message from Amazon’s head of human resources, Beth Galetti, and says the company has informed “affected colleagues in our organization.” The subject of the email mentions “Project Dawn” and the email states that it has been “cancelled”, possibly indicating that it was recalled by the sender after the fact. It is unclear what Project Dawn refers to.
Amazon representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Job cuts come after Amazon announcement in October, it would lay off 14,000 employees. At the time, the company said the reductions would continue into 2026 as it found “additional places where we could remove layers.”
Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO said the layoffs were aimed at reducing management levels and bureaucracy within the company. He also predicted last June that efficiency gains through AI would reduce Amazon’s workforce in the years to come.
Earlier Tuesday, the company announcement she was reorganizing her grocery business. Amazon said it would close its Fresh Supermarkets and Go convenience stores to prioritize investments in Whole Foods stores and online grocery delivery.
Jason Buechel, Amazon’s top grocery executive told staff members in a note, the company must make “more deliberate choices” to win over customers. He also announced other restructuring measures in the division, including his intention to appoint a head of “grocery product quality”.
The company is expected to report its fourth-quarter results after the bell on February 5.
