And after an Axel Tuanzebe own goal got them going, Habib Diarra all but wrapped up the win before the break before Chemsdine Talbi put the icing on the cake with an absolute screamer.
Scott Parker’s visitors had more possession overall, but were absolutely gutless in attack and never looked like scoring.
Burnley are now 11 points behind Nottingham Forest in 17th place and look almost certain to return to the Championship.
This defeat makes it 15 league games without a victory. In their top-flight history, it was only between February 1889 and February 1890 that the Clarets had a longer winless streak (19).
Sunderland, meanwhile, climb to eighth place and are just five points off the top four.
For his first start since returning from the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, Diarra opened the scoring when his shot deflected off Tuanzebe.
Sunderland extended their lead with a powerful strike which was palmed away into the bottom corner by Martin Dubravka.
Nordi Mukiele then sent a brilliant low pass to unmarked Brian Brobbey who mishit the ball, but the hosts quickly recycled the attempt and Talbi moved towards the edge of the area, unleashing a superb strike which rattled the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
