While artists, including Bad bunny And Billie Eilish made bold statements about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the Grammys 2026, Jelly roll keeps quiet – for now.
Jelly Roll (real name Jason DeFord) refused to give his opinion on the tense climate in the United States after winning three awards at the music awards ceremony on Sunday February 1, including Best Contemporary Country Album for his file Beautifully broken.
Reporters asked the 41-year-old singer backstage in the press room if he wanted to comment on “what’s happening in the country right now,” to which he replied: “Not really.”
“So, it’s the truth, and I’m glad someone asked me because I like to talk about this stuff and people care to hear my opinion, but so, I can tell you that people shouldn’t care to hear my opinion,” Jelly Roll told reporters.
He continued: “You know, I’m a stupid redneck. I didn’t watch enough. I didn’t have a phone for 18 months.”
Jelly Roll went on to admit, “I’m so disconnected from what’s going on.”
“I grew up in a house of insane chaos. I didn’t even know politics was real until I was in my 20s, in prison,” the “Son of a Sinner” singer said. “That’s how disconnected I am [you are] when you grew up in a home of drug addicts. Do you think we’ve had joint calls on what’s happening in rural politics? Like, we’re just trying to find a way to survive, man, you know?
Jelly Roll, however, said he “has a lot to say” and will share his views in the coming week.
“I’m going to go through it next week, and everyone is going to hear exactly what I have to say about this in the loudest and clearest way I’ve ever expressed in my life. So, I’m looking forward to that,” he added.
In addition to Best Contemporary Country Album, Jelly Roll also won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Amen” with Shaboozey and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for his participation in Brandon Lake“Hard Fought Hallelujah” by .
While accepting the award for Best Contemporary Country Album, Jelly Roll became emotional while paying tribute to his wife: Rabbit Xowith whom he had posed earlier on the red carpet at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
“First of all, Jesus, I hear you and I listen. Lord, I listen. Lord,” he said. “Second, I want to thank my beautiful wife. I would never have changed my life without you. I would have ended up dead or in prison. I would have killed myself without you and Jesus. Thank you for that.”
Other stars, including Bad Bunny, spoke about ICE on stage Sunday.
“Before I say thank you to God, I’m going to say ICE out,” Bunny said Sunday while accepting the award for best urban music album for I should have taken more photos. “We are not savages, we are not animals, we are not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans.”
“I want to tell people, I know it’s hard not to hate these days, and I thought we have contaminados – I don’t know how to say that in English,” the singer, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, continued, referring to the word “contaminated.”
