When does “The Last of Us” end? HBO doesn’t know

A third season of HBO The last of us is in preparation, we already knew that. What we don’t know is if the show will be go beyond on this point, and recent comments from HBO exec Casey Bloys don’t help.

As part of a long interview regarding HBO in general (some of which we covered), Deadline asked Bloys how much gas the show had in the tank. He told the outlet that “it certainly seems to be the case,” but ultimately said the answer depends on showrunner Craig Mazin. Intentional or not, this is more of a non-answer than anything of substance, although it’s probably not as true as it seems at first glance.

Last year, Mazin mentioned adapting The Last of Us Part II maybe one effort over three seasonsand said that trying to tie it in two “would take forever.” Although he suggested that one solution would be to simply do a longer season three, he acknowledged that the writing team was planning ahead in case this extended season couldn’t wrap things up for some reason. “We really try to think about things in a fundamental way,” he said at the time. “We thought about seasons three and four, trying to get as much exposure as possible. […] The challenge of season two was, “Okay, this source material goes way beyond just one season. »

The Last of Us Part II has a lot of moving parts to its story, and it was a long game compared to its predecessor. If the series adaptation took a long time, this wouldn’t be the case. that surprising, although it might irritate both longtime fans and TV-only fans. For now, don’t worry too much about when it ends, just when it will return – which currently isn’t until 2027… without hopefully remaking those first seasons.
