From Teen Star to R. Kelly’s Target

In a new interview with Rolling StoneReshona Landfair talks about how, decades ago, she was just a spunky, small-time rapper in the Chicago hip-hop group 4 the Cause, touring Europe and performing covers of hits like “Stand By Me.” Music ran in his family: his aunt Sparkle was a rising R&B star, his father a professional guitarist, and his mother a gospel singer. But at 14, her life was hijacked by R. Kelly, the man she once called her godfather, whose illegal tape turned her into a public tragedy she never asked to be a part of. For years, she even shortened her name to “Chon” just so she could navigate daily life without whispers following her.

Kelly’s Abuse,” and the decades she spent living as the girl the world can’t name. “There’s no job I can apply for if it’s not at the forefront of my life” she told Rolling Stone. “Once I realized I had no peace or privacy [by hiding]I had to make it my own.»

From Jane Doe to taking center stage

As previously statedKelly’s crimes have been widely documented in recent years. Decades of coercion, abuse and videotaping minors culminated in federal convictions in 2021 and 2022. But for Landfair, the real story was always her survival. “I just really wanted to capture the fact that I was a human being,“, she said. “I had dreams and aspirations [and] wasn’t just the ‘R. Daughter Kelly.» After years spent in silence, hidden under the name “Jane Doe”, she finally takes the microphone, while owning her truth and her name.
