Justin Rose leads by six strokes at Farmers Insurance Open heading into final round with record score in sight | Golf news

Justin Rose has a six-shot lead after the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines with a tournament record score and a 13th PGA Tour title in his sights.

Rose notched four birdies on a flawless front nine, including three in a row from the fifth, then mixed in three more with three bogeys coming home to post a four-under 68 and reach 21 under for the event in San Diego.

The best winning score in Farmers Insurance Open history is 22 under, achieved by Tiger Woods in 1999 and George Burns in 1987. The 45-year-old will therefore break that score if he shoots two under or better on Sunday.

The largest margin of victory is the eight strokes by which Woods, a seven-time champion, beat Ryuji Imada in 2008. Rose won this tournament with a score of 21 under in 2019, finishing two strokes ahead of Adam Scott.

It will now take a slump on his part or something special on the part of his opponents to deny him a second title at Torrey Pines and a third victory on the PGA Tour in three years, after the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2023 and the FedEx St. Jude Championship last August.

American Joel Dahmen is a distant second at minus-15 after matching Rose’s four under on Saturday, while Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune and South Korean Si Woo Kim are tied for third at minus-13, about eight shots behind the leader.

Today’s round belonged to Germany’s Stephan Jaeger, whose seven-under 65 propelled him 39 places in the standings to sixth at 11 under, with Ireland’s Seamus Power on the same total after four bogeys in his last seven holes.

Brooks Koepka – playing his first PGA Tour event since returning from LIV Golf – is tied for 61st at two under. with his third round one-over with an extraordinary shot on the first green from the path of the carts.
