This Sunday will mark the fifth anniversary of the military’s takeover of Myanmar in a coup that toppled elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The military marked the anniversary by announcing a landslide victory for its political party in a general election that was widely denounced as a sham. But, according to Mark Farmaner, director of the NGO “Burma Campaign UK”, the five years since the coup have been “horribly bad” for the military junta, which has lost control of large swaths of the country to armed rebel groups.
