A 13-year-old boy died Thursday after being mauled by a shark at a popular beach on Brazil’s east coast, the state government said in a statement.
The attack occurred off Chifre Beach in Brazil’s tourist area of Pernambuco, according to the State Committee for Shark Incident Monitoring (CEMIT). said in a press release.
The boy was taken to hospital but “did not survive his injuries”, CEMIT added.
Dr Levy Dalton, who treated the victim, said the boy was bitten on the right thigh, before suffering cardiopulmonary arrest. UOL Notícias Brasil reported.
“Unfortunately we weren’t able to resuscitate him, … unfortunately we weren’t able to do much for him,” Dalton told reporters, according to the media outlet.
Brazilian point of sale G1 identified the victim being Deivson Rocha Dantas. According to G1, the boy’s cousin, Lídia Emanuele, told TV Globo that the shark “ate almost his whole leg” and that he was pulled out of the water by other people who were around the same age.
Dozens of beaches along Pernambuco’s turquoise coast have received shark warnings, authorities said, adding that Chifre Beach had issued four such signs for beachgoers.
Nonetheless, CEMIT said it would step up shark monitoring after the boy’s death and reinstate a suspended program to track the creatures with microchips.

More than 80 shark attacks have been recorded in Pernambuco since 1992, including 26 fatal ones, not including the boy who died Thursday, CEMIT said.
Last week, a 12-year-old boy who bitten by a shark in Sydney Harbor in Australia deceased of his injuries, his family said.
