Fans who don’t want to wait until December to see if Star-Lord appears in “Avengers: Doomsday” can see Pratt on screen in “Mercy,” where he plays a detective accused of murdering his wife. His character only has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to a judge made up of artificial intelligence.

At the New York premiere on Tuesday, January 20, director Timur Bekmambetov said PEOPLE review that Pratt gave a “very vulnerable” performance as homicide detective Chris Raven.

“This movie, it’s not just an action movie – because we expect Chris Pratt to be tough, to jump and entertain us – but it’s [also] a very vulnerable and very broken man. And it was unique for him,” he said. “He played that for the first time.”

This isn’t the first time he’s worked with Pratt. The pair first worked together on the 2008 action thriller “Wanted.” He said that experience taught him that Pratt was a versatile actor, but admitted that, in his last film, Pratt surprised him with “how surprisingly dramatic he could be.”

Although Pratt became famous for his stunts, much of the criticism of the film comes down to the fact that the actor is tied to a chair for most of the film’s 90 minutes. Last year at New York City Comic Con, Pratt said he asked them to confine him to the chair so he wouldn’t have to pretend he was tied up.

During the panel, which also featured Bekmambetov and co-star Kali Reis, the “Passengers” actor opened up about how being tied down presents its own challenges.

“I was handcuffed to this chair,” he said. “And part of it is that I’m head at the end, when I’m about to be – well, I don’t want to spoil the movie – but I’m attached to this thing.”

He went on to say, “There’s a certain level of claustrophobia that you naturally feel when you’re attached to something, and that was helpful, actually.”
